These are some sketches from when I was designing the concept of the logo, and also story-boarding the animation. I start all my sketches on procreate, and then take that sketch into illustrator for refinement.

Crater is a footwear consignment store - selling the latest popular and in-demand sneakers. I had the pleasure of creating the logo and over-all brand identity of this business. Designing assets such as business cards, logo animation, packaging design, etc.
My client wanted to start a business embodying the concept of a moon/crater as it's silhouette. With moons having a variety of ways to be drawn, and which also have been used by a ton of business already, I wanted to focus on memorability and uniqueness. The drive behind the business was to be competitive; meaning affordable prices, shipping, and stellar customer service. I wanted the logo to resemble that character. Using colors and design language that were bold and up-front - hence the high contrast design choice. What resulted from that was a logo with emphasized contrast, soft curves for a pleasant feel, and neutral colors for professionalism.
This was the gray of choice. Having this shade of gray was light enough to still contrast the black, and dark enough to stand out in a lighter background. The obvious with moons being gray as well. With most logos simply just taking the standard black and white/negative space approach, adding a drop of gray into the mix really does a lot in it's character.
